Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic, autoimmune inflammatory disease, primarily of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms include inflammatory changes in the synovial membranes and articular structures, but the hallmark of rheumatoid arthritis is symmetrical polyarthritis. Diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis relies on history and physical as well as serum and radiologic examinations. Diet, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and surgery may play a role in rheumatoid arthritis treatment, but the mainstay of therapy is rheumatoid arthritis drugs.
